The 15-member jury’s eyes twinkled Thursday, August 23, 2007 when U.S. District Judge A. Joe Fish told them the day was over by 10 a.m. But their eyes suddenly gloomed and their eyebrows scrunched as Fish said they were required to stay until noon since the court staff had already ordered them lunch. After FBI agent Robert Miranda concluded his testimony by about 10 a.m., prosecutors said they will call their last witness on Monday after which they will rest their case.

Greg Westfall, defendant Abdulrahman Odeh’s attorney, spent nearly half an hour proving that the majority of the payments to the Holy Land Foundation from the broadcasted overseas speakers were toward the orphan sponsorship program.

Prosecutor Nathan Garrett began the redirect examination of Miranda by saying that Hamas leader Jamil Hamami split from Hamas in 1996. He added that only about four Hamas individuals were separately designated. But Hamas is much larger than that, Miranda said. Miranda concluded by saying he was shocked to see a security manual at a charity organization.

Ghassan Elashi’s lawyer, John Cline, then re-crossed Miranda. He said several Hamas charities and individuals were separately designated. Therefore, if other people and groups were Hamas entities, they would be listed on the U.S. Treasury Department’s list of Specially Designated Terrorists (SDT) as well. But none of the individuals included in HLF’s speaker’s list, the zakat committees and their board members are separately designated on the SDT list.
